Self Portrait.
My family has always been a closely-knit unit. While we were growing up, my siblings and I rarely fought or argued. My parents have always practiced an authoritative parenting style that promoted a set of consistent and justifiable rules, and that valued the role of each family member. My siblings and I were able to understand our parents’ expectations and we never felt unfairly treated. I believe that my parents’ parenting style helped my family grow into a cohesive unit in which each individual is respected and has value. It is this sense of unity and mutual importance that encourages us to support each other’s dreams and to respect each other’s ideas and aspirations. Furthermore, we genuinely enjoy each other’s company and feel happy around each other. I believe that family is a support system. In a world of ever-changing circumstances and challenging obstacles, I know that my family will always offer a sense of constancy and a feeling of security.
My family and I have always loved to travel. While living in Asia for four years, we were presented with amazing opportunities to travel throughout Asia and Europe. I think that traveling and developing a worldly perspective is very important for children. I believe that, because I was constantly exposed to people of different nationalities and backgrounds at such a young age, I am much more accepting of others than are many of my peers. I believe that I have developed respect and appreciation for others’ beliefs and customs. In addition, traveling to poverty-stricken areas of undeveloped countries has made me realize how
fortunate I truly am. I am deeply appreciative for my life and for my parents who work hard in order to support our lifestyle.
During my senior year of high school, I became a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program Competition. I believe that my earning of a finalist designation in this competition reflects several of my core values. My success in the National Merit Scholarship Program indicates the great value I place on higher education. Becoming educated and skilled is obviously critical for expanding one’s future career opportunities. However, I believe that maintaining a desire to learn is crucial for everyday life, as well. Because I have a strong curiosity for knowledge, I am continually engaged in the world around me as I strive to learn more. Becoming a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program also signifies my perseverance and my motivation. I have always been highly self-motivated, especially with respect to my academic endeavors. I do not allow myself to settle for less than my best effort. This drive stems from my desire to learn as well as the pride that I place in my work. Because I value my work, I want to ensure that my results appropriately reflect the time and energy that I have invested.
One of the mottos by which I strive to live is the following quote: “to thine own self be true.” I believe that living by this motto is the only way to be truly happy. In order to stay true to myself, I must follow a two-part process. I must first be honest with myself and acknowledge and accept my values, my interests and my beliefs. I cannot possibly stay true to myself if I have not first evaluated and accepted the principles that I support. The second component of staying true to oneself involves living by one’s core values and refusing to let others change these values. I strive to stay true to myself by upholding my core values in my daily life and in my interactions with others. Furthermore, I trust in my values and I resist the peer pressure of others who attempt to dissuade me from my principles.
